FRONTAGES / HOUSING

Streets organize life in Houston’s Fifth Ward. Because of the frequent absence of sidewalks, many streets in the area serve as pedestrian paths.

FRONTAGES, a strategy for four small dwellings -- one set of two accessory dwelling units and two primary units adaptable to a number of sites -- coopts this street condition, deploying a street formed by two crossing lines, in order to connect and separate units.

Commonplace formal, scaler, and locational hierarchies between primary and accessory dwellings are broken down through a coordinated series of conceptual folds, yielding a variety of private and shared spaces.
